Otic Route (ANFISMAN)

Drugs used to treat ear inflammation and infections can be given directly to the ear. Ear drops containing a solution or suspension are usually given only to the external ear canal. Before dripping ear drops, one should thoroughly clean the ears with a damp, dry cloth. Unless the drug is used for a long time or is used too much, a little drug enters the bloodstream, so that side effects on the body are absent or minimal. Medications that can be given via the otic route include hydrocortisone (to relieve inflammation), ciprofloxacin (to treat infections), and benzocaine (to numb ears).
